JAMES WOOD
AMBRIGHT UK AND IRELAND HEAD
Hi, I'm James. After graduating from university, I moved to China for what I thought would be a one‑year English‑teaching adventure. I loved the experience so much that I stayed for eight more years, working first in education and later in admissions consultancy. I eventually returned to the UK to join the University of Manchester, where I worked in student recruitment and admissions. Today, I serve as the main UK contact for the Ambassador Year in China Programme, supporting and guiding our next cohort of teachers as they prepare for their own life‑changing year abroad.
Advice for incoming Educational Ambassadors?
“Starting the Ambassador Year in China Programme is an exciting step, and the best way to make the most of it is to get fully involved. The more you put into your new community, school, and daily life, the more rewarding your year will become. You’ll encounter countless new experiences, and while some moments may feel challenging, each one will help you grow. This programme offers an unforgettable opportunity that can genuinely change how you see the world. And who knows — what begins as a one‑year adventure might turn into something much bigger. It certainly did for me.”

Advice for incoming Educational Ambassadors?
“Right after graduation is such a perfect time to go out and see the world! Think about it—you have so much time and energy. This is an unique opportunity in combining "work" and "exploration" by immersing yourself in a new environment.
You will gradually find that your Chinese language and communication skills have enhanced, and more importantly, you will see that you have a remarkable ability to solve problems. No matter you choose to stay in China for a longer time or going back to your home country, such abilities will become a treasure that stays with you for a lifetime.”
